Object Resurrection

RCA Hockney Gallery, London (2018)

Across RCA Week / / Workshop

A week-long workshop run by Rafael El Baz and Ewan Alston, exploring how cross-disciplinary methodologies could be applied to bring value to discarded objects. Object Resurrection was held at the Royal College of Art during Across RCA Week with 17 cross-discipline students from the school.

According to the UNU, around 40 million tonnes of consumer electronic products end up in landfill each year. Participants in the workshop were encouraged to re-purpose and re-use waste electronic items, and on the first day were tasked with disassembling a printer to understand and find value in its component parts.

Using a broken M-Audio keyboard, alongside elements from the HP printer we had disassembled I created a mobile, re-using the wires and keys. The kinetic structure cast peculiar, organic shapes across the walls which would grow, fade and disperse as it quietly spun above the gallery space.
